How To Find Books At WCSU Using CONSULS, The Library Catalog

If you know the book’s Library of Congress SUBJECT HEADING :

Type the Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH) into the text box and click “Search”. CONSULS will generate a list of titles that fall under that LCSH.

Why Should You Use Subject Searching?

For example, a keyword search using the term “American Indians” will result only in a list of titles that use that particular term. It will not list titles that use the term “Native Americans” instead. But by using the correct LCSH for this search (in this case, “Indians of North America”), you can generate a comprehensive list of all titles pertaining to this topic.

To determine the appropriate subject heading(s) for your research needs, look in the LC Subject Headings books, also known as the “Big Red Books,” which are shelved in the reference area of Haas Library, or talk to a reference librarian.

TIP: The full list of LCSH is not available online. However, a quick way to find out appropriate subject terms would be to perform a keyword search using terms that describe your topic, selecting a title that matches what you are looking for, and viewing the assigned LCSH for that title, which are found in “Find Similar Items” or “Full Record”. You can then click on the subject terms to automatically search CONSULS with that LCSH.
