<head>Historical/Biographical Note</head>
<p>Justice of the Peace Aaron T. Bates is the son of Taylor Bates and was born in Ridgefield, CT in 1846.  He studied law with Danbury's White &amp; McDonald firm and was admitted to the Bar in 1874. He was married and had 2 children as of 1896.</p>

<p>The collection is comprisd of ledgers listing cases presumably overseen by Aaron T. Bates and civil cases held in the Danbury court house (in  which Bates is listed as an attorney appearing before the court).  Names, nature of charges and costs are indicated but the disposition of the case is not always noted. </p>
