Historical/Biographical Note

The role of the the Division of Academic Affairs has evolved in name and purpose over the history the history of the school. Currently the division is headed by the V.P. of Academic Affairs & Provost. It works closely with the deans of the schools, the registrar’s office, the enrollment department officer, the director of the library and the grants director to serve the undergraduate and graduate community in development of curriculum and faculty, outreach to the community, research opportunities, statewide projects to develop educational opportunities and programs. All Academic Programs are collected under this division.

Scope and Content Note

The records in this collection have been divided into five series: (1) Ancell School of Business, (2) School of Arts and Sciences, (3) Graduate Studies and External Programs, (4) Faculty, and (5) Division of Professional studies. The records include correspondence, annual reports, programs, and pamphlets.

This collection documents the development and formation of the undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies programs, and spans the years 1919-2003 with the bulk of the collection ranging from 1950 to 1980.

The collection includes records concerning the Interim Program in which freshmen and sophomore students were required to participate in and successfully complete an actual work experience project during one month between semesters in a non-paying position with business, government agency, or non-profit organizations. The purpose was to broaden the college curriculum by giving students new experiences beyond the classroom, library, and training schools. Students worked in local and state communities while other projects carried students out of state to such as places as New York, Florida, Texas, and Kansas

Information pertaining to faculty includes faculty rosters and Faculty Focus, a quarterly publication designed to share with peers the myriad, interesting activities of WestConn faculty. The Profiles section offers an in-depth view of people, departments, programs and/or faculty professional achievements. Faculty Workshops focused on curriculum development in the early 1950s when DSTC was nationally known for its leadership in teacher education. These folders include workshop agendas, activities, year-end reports, and minutes of meetings, which demonstrate total faculty involvement in curriculum development.

The school awarded the first teacher education degree in 1938. Locust Avenue and Roberts Avenue Schools were affiliated with the Teachers College and were designated as Laboratory Schools. The schools were conducted as laboratories in which students were given an opportunity to observe and work in a functioning school unit. The Final Report of the Presidents' Committee On Laboratory School Experiences, dated 1965, includes the four State Teachers Colleges and their evaluation and recommendations concerning this program.
