Rationale:

Statistics itself fosters discussion-based, real-world learning. In particular, in my classes, I use class time to discuss how we use statistics to 'model the world', rather than the manipulation of numbers. Students become involved in several small group projects throughout the semester, as well as a semester project that involves the collection and analysis of data and a written and oral presentation of their results.

Skills and Methods:

Academic skills and methods that are incorporated into the class include: critical thinking (small group assignments as well as in-class discussions); writing (small group assignments, discussions online using Vista platform, and semester project); oral communication (project presentations).

Success Factors:

University success factors include: technology skills (students will learn Minitab, a statistical software package, as well as use Vista for discussions, homework and some tests); working in groups (I incorporate several small group assignments in the class, as well as a semester project. (Samples of these will be sent to the committee chair.)
