Platform vs. Products or Applications
The problem with products, be they open source or commercial, is that they tend to be focused on solving one problem. Platforms on the other hand, provides support for solving multiple problems at the cost of being more abstract or requiring additional steps to complete the same task. I doesn't mean you can't build a platform out of products.
