Why Metadata

As with any kind of collection meta data help users and curators find and manage the collection.

Proposed Metadata Table

I found this table on the web at California State University at Northridge I compared it with several others out there on the web and it looks complete while not being overwhelming. There may be items here that we don't want or there may be items that we need to add. Most of these elements are Dublin Core so they will be interchangable (if that should ever be necessary.


Order of the Content of fields in table reflects the order displayed. All fields are repeatable.

Use LCSH terms which are strings that are constructed in a specific order. LCSH strings will be added to the controlled vocabulary. If an appropriate string is not present in the controlled vocabulary, contact subject cataloger. Use spaces and dashes between the main heading and its subdivisions. A semi-colon will automatically be added when using the controlled vocabulary. Use the semi-colon between strings so they will display as separate lines. Remove the final semi-colon.
