What is Instructional Technology?

- Educational Technology from Wikipedia much different but I think more interesting. -bk

In general, where we are now in the online world is where we were before the beginning of e-learning. Content is organized according to this traditional model and delivered either completely online or in conjunction with more traditional seminars, to cohorts of students, led by an instructor, following a specified curriculum to be completed at a predetermined pace.
Instructional Technology or Information Technology --Brian, Tue, 07 Nov 2006 10:20:51 -0500 reply
It may be just me but while I think instructional design is important I think it is premature to talk about that design being embedded in the technology. At this point in time I think it might be easier to first focus on using information technologies for instructional purposes. Focus on the platform for instruction first.
What's cool about the web is that it makes it easy and convienent to connect to resources anytime or from almost anywhere so the first thing is to help everybody have a web presence. My question there is should it be at the course level or at the person level? I don't think there is a right answer here but I think developing a web presence at the peronal level is better than the course because your audience is bigger than just your students.
Ok now we everone has a web presence. What do we want to put in it? I'm not sure why but people still feel that it's hard to put stuff on the web. Blogs have replaced the typical web page creation for lots of folks. Blog software makes it pretty easy to add content to you web and there software that meets almost every users desire. With the addtion of comments, trackbacks, and rss blogs are also a great communication tool. Lets do blogs!
Wikis are another popular information technology. The blog is pretty much one person but a wiki allows multiple people to edit the same text.
Rich media like audio, video and images are harder to create but are easy to share over the web.
I guess I saying focus on the creation of text and rich learning content delivered through common info technology and take the instructional discussion out to the community as a place to start thinking about how people learn and what it means for teaching and learning.
Waterfall Development --Brian, Tue, 07 Nov 2006 10:51:50 -0500 reply
Traditional development methods involve using subject matter experts (SMEs) to pass on information to the instructional designer who, in turn, designs the solution. A developer then builds the interactive solution based on this design, and the quality assurance team tests the solution against the design and test plan. This waterfall approach can lead to long and costly design and development cycles, which can reduce the effectiveness of material with critical timelines or content that is constantly changing. Instructional Designers Must --Brian, Sat, 11 Nov 2006 07:48:29 -0500 reply
Courses and programs are no longer the only design objects for learning designers. Designers must shift their attention to the more ambiguous, tumultuous learning environment in which learners now function. Designers no longer create only instruction sequences. They must create environments, networks, access to resources, and increase the capacity of learners to function and forage for their own knowledge. - Learning Development Cycle
Since we're moving away from just the course the library can take a role here!
