Music in the Digital Age
Digital Music is almost taken for granted these days. This project is an attempt to move the library a little further down the digital road.
NOTE: ACRL has listed "increased emphasis on digitizing collections" as the number one assumption for academic libraries of the future. See the top ten at the ACRL web page (http://www.acrl.org).
The project is driven by the expectation that by removing the constraints of physical access to the CD collection:
- the collection will be used more often by more users;
- the faculty and students will appreciate online access because it allows them to save time;
- the faculty will be able to use more music in their assignments because access to the music will be less contentious;
- students will have access to music off campus through an audio reserve system.
Project Goals
We have two goals. The first is relatively simple while the second is more complex. If we are only able to complete Goal One, we still think that project would be worth doing.
Goal One
- This goal is relatively simple:
- To provide complete access to the library's compact disc (CD) collection at CD digital quality. Access to this collection will be restricted to computers either in the library or a music lab and classrooms.
Goal Two
- This goal is more complex:
- To create an "Audio Reserves Collection" that will allow faculty to place selected music into course reserves where authenticated students, both on and off campus, will be able to use the selections for assignments.
