The author retains copyright. UMI is allowed to publish the abstract in dissertation abstracts. UMI is allow to sell copies of the thesis ($29.00 currently) of wich the author recieves a share.

By default, materials deposited into WestCollections are open access, which means anyone on the web can access them. Also by default, all WestCollections materials are protected by copyright, with all rights reserved by the copyright holder.
