Information Literacy Workshop Scheduled for Tuesday, March 20, 2007, 9 AM to 2 PM (Haas 413)

View invitation to the workshop, which went out 1/19/07, here.

We will have final tally of attendees by 3/10. See above: tally as of 3/9 is 14 folks. 14 + 4 librarians + Maria + 1? = 19-20 people.

Workshop Overview

Area High School Librarians have asked WCSU librarians to present/facilitate a workshop on information literacy that would fulfill their requirements for professional development/continuing education. They are interested in learning about strategies for improving information literacy instruction at high school/senior level in order to prepare students better for college level work and successful careers. They are especially interested in strategies for involving/partnering with teachers in this effort. They are especially interested in learning about our information literacy program and how we achieve collaboration with teaching faculty.

How all this came about

Sally Markiewicz read a School Library Journal article over the summer that sparked her interest in collaborating with WCSU. She contacted WCSU libraries in Fall 2006 in the hopes of planning collaborative programs. Thanks to Sally for initiating the project!

Other topics of interest:

Liza Zandonella from Region 15 has requested topics related to assured experiences (i.e., research assignment required of all students) and assessment of student's information literacy skills.

11-12 - Presentations, Questions, Issues from area High School Librarians (facilitated by Natalie and Sally)

Questions NK and SM will pose to WCSU librarians and in some cases to area library/media specialists:

a) What are your bservations about freshmen preparation/preparation of graduating high school seniors?

b) What types of projects will they do in college? See WIKI subdirectory on this topic.

c) Marketing library services: how do we do it?

d) Collaboration with teaching faculty/teachers- what are different ways you do it at WCSU? What are ways school librarians do it?

e) How do you work with classes/faculty member when they come to the WCSU library (library instruction)? How do the library/media specialists provide "library instruction" (insert your own term)?

Give and take, WCSU librarians can ask attendees these or related questions.

Maria might also talk about Eng 106 assignments involving library research (& other), also her observations re: student preparation.

By 12 N we should have key areas of interest/query nailed down.

12-1 PM - Luncheon in Room 508

1-2 PM - Tour of library website (15-30 min.), RG will promote/encourage use of WCSU Library resources by area high school students, NK will show DHS Media Center website, Liza will show Region 15's, future ways to collaborate, final wrap up.
