Systems Meeting Agenda
Plan for ILS Upgrade to 2009
See http://csdirect.iii.com/release/enhancements/2009b_preliminary_enhancements.shtml
Update on Image space in CONSULS (Edward)
Review what software is being used at what campus
Discuss use of ERM
Discuss goals from last year
Keyword search examples in CONSULS (added by Veronica, from one of the WCSU librarians): The examples given under the Keywords Search option in CONSULS are not very helpful--just "privacy" and "indian cooking." Could we please add a few that illustrate Boolean logic and end truncation, for example:
- television and violence
- television and violen*
- television and (violen* or aggress*)
- (television or media) and (violen* or aggress*)
- television and violen* and children
GOALS/PROPOSALS FOR 2009-2010
- Training. Propose advanced system administration training for one person from each institution to attend training - for redundancy and backup.
- Statistics collection from III. Explore various methods to retrieve information systematically.
- Improve communication and information sharing. Consider a public blog/wiki to communicate issues, decisions, questions
- LDAP. Experiment with the possibility of using campus LDAP servers for authentication (universities only).
- ERM Implementation. Continue progress, including statistics collection using SUSHI.
Dark clouds on the horizon
- Institutional/Consortial Repository. Explore possibility of creating/maintaining a repository for the intellectual output of the consortium.
- Implementation of a next generation OPAC. Explore products such as WorldCat local (commercial) or LibraryThing for Libraries, VuFind, LibraryFind, Zebra (IndexData), etc. Alternatively, move away from Innovative Millennium into an open source catalog environment (such as Evergreen) to allow more local flexibility but continue to maintain a union catalog.
- Metadata format standardization. Develop (adopt) a common metadata format and system (OAI-ORE compliant) for the purpose creating and sharing local collection inside and outside of the CSUs (see repository above).
- Mobile interface for CONSULS?
Food for Thought
- Discoverability - a paper from the University of Minnesota Libraries. It's long, but just read the first couple of pages to see their "Trends". Very interesting.

I'm not able to attend --Brian Kennison, Tue, 20 Oct 2009 19:11:13 -0400 reply
I'm not going to be able to be there tomorrow but if you look at this agenda I'll be able to still put in my 2 cents. I hope you won't mind.
More Food For Thought --Brian Kennison, Tue, 20 Oct 2009 11:52:28 -0400 reply
In response to VK's food for thought there is another very good report from Minnesota. They did a big survey (2006) and found the kind of things that faculty and student say they want It's built around four main themes, discover, gather, create, share. Here's a link to a very good graphic taken from the report, that provides a great summary to what they found. (there is also a link to the complete report. ). I think if we could identify anything in any of these areas it would serve us well.
Local Collection Development --Brian, Tue, 20 Oct 2009 12:01:59 -0400 reply
In Edward's dark clouds section, I would also support the idea of finding/developing a system that allows us to create and share better local collections. (really I would welcome any of these)
III Training --Brian, Tue, 20 Oct 2009 12:17:24 -0400 reply
I don't know about the others but we at Western, seem to be challenged when is comes to batch loading order and MARC records. We essentially load records one at a time (even though we pay for PromptCat service). I think if we could get a handle on loading records it would save lots of time and be more consistent. If I was going to vote for training, this is what I would vote for (*this could be a mix of both tech services and systems peope). 2 (maybe 3) at $1,000 a day.
Teaming with Index Data --Brian Kennison, Tue, 20 Oct 2009 19:06:56 -0400 reply
As some of you might know we use the IndexData tool Zebra in the CAO site. I think I'm gonna stick with Zebra in our (WCSU's) move from DSpace . As you know, Index Data software is open source so you can use it for free but if others are willing, it might be useful to have a pros / cons discussion about giving them money and make them part of our team. :-D (they recently signed a contact with Ohio-link)
Topic Maps --Brian Kennison, Tue, 20 Oct 2009 19:17:00 -0400 reply
I know Edward is interested in this. I'm willing, let do one! What do you say?
