Migration Schedule
To avoid confusion this is the latest schedule. Before

Tuesday, Jul. 25th III will bring down the existing service and repartition the hard drive to allow us enough space to complete the upgrade on the existing server. this will be done after hours and should not affect any of the libraries.
Wednesday, July 25th Prep. this requires that

  • There are no suspended invoices
  • All invoices have been posted
Thurday, Aug. 3rd Upgrade. We will be down all day as we upgrade to 2005. The next week we will be testing to make sure everyone can log in etc...

Wednesday Aug. 9th Migration Assuming everything is functioning correctly with 2005 III will bring us down and migrate the server. This is being done with the 2005 release allowing us ample time to upgrade to 2006 when it is most appropriate for us.

Innovative's New WebPAC Pros
III announced a new suite of options built for their "WebPAC Pro" product. Apparently, WebPAC Pro will be free with the 2006 upgrade, but I am sure the other options (RSS feeds, etc) will be costly. Read more here.

Libraries and Information Science

I sometimes try and think about what we're trying to accomplish in libraries. I came upon this passage from the Wikipedia under Information Science

Information science is primarily concerned with the structure, creation, management, storage, retrieval, dissemination and transfer of information. Information science also includes studying the application of information in organizations, on its usage and the interaction between people, organizations and information systems. Within information science attention has been given in recent years to human computer interaction (HCI) and to the ways people generate, use and find information.

I look at this a think this is exactly what we should be doing. Are we?
